Every school and employer sets its own rules on AI use. These rules vary by institution, department, and in some cases by individual instructor. This page outlines the common patterns behind such policies and explains how to identify the one that applies to you.

Timing

Some schools wrote their AI guidelines recently. Others are still working off language from before AI tools existed.

Subject

A computer science course might welcome AI-assisted coding. A writing course at the same school might not.

Stage of work

Brainstorming with AI is usually fine. Submitting AI-written text as your final draft is where disclosure rules, or outright restrictions, tend to kick in.

Course level

Intro courses often expect more independent work than advanced ones, where the basics are assumed.

How to Find Your Policy

Unfortunately, we do not maintain a database of individual school policies, as they change frequently and vary by course. Instead, we recommend the following steps:

    Ask your instructor directly if any aspect remains unclear.
